Space Burials in 2135

In the year 2135, with land masses in Singapore and other cities exhausted, governments and organisations are looking towards new realms to alleviate space; for both the living and the dead. Space burials have taken flight as a viable burial option available for Singapore citizens, which is further supported by the state’s Burial to Order Programme. Following the trends from 2021 to 2135, space burials have further spiked due to growing cremation trends, the advancement of space and burial technology, and the declining emphasis on socio-cultural and religious burial practices.

In addition, the notion of space exploration in the afterlife — where the common person could ‘live’ in space — has enabled space burial options to thrive. A symbolic portion of the cremated ashes of the deceased is stored in ash capsules, and space shuttles will then journey with batches of these capsules. Upon reaching a preferred destination, these ash capsules are launched into space. These capsules will then disintegrate and become “one” with the universe. Thus, private entities offering space memorialisation or commemoration services have emerged, aiming to bridge the cosmic gap between the living on earth, and the commemoration of the deceased in outer space.

How does Cosmos work?

Cosmos functions as a space memorialisation and commemoration platform for Singapore citizens in the year 2135. First, the coordinates and details of the deceased who embarked on a space burial will have to be provided to Cosmos. These coordinates will be integrated into Cosmos’s platform, and the information provided will be used to create a Cosmos space memorial profile. Next, visitors can sign in to the digital platform using the deceased’s name and ID, and after a database scan, the deceased’s profile and additional information will appear alongside the burial location transiting in the background. They can choose to send messages or gifts digitally. When the visit button is clicked, a real-time scene of the burial location will fully materialise.

Citizens can also choose to visit their loved ones in our dedicated Cosmos Projection room. Similar to the digital platform, the scene moves and swirls according to space conditions in real-time. However, the platform will be projected on a screen in a private setting, thus allowing for visitation of more than one person(s). This mimicks a comforting, peaceful yet surreal setting for people to reminiscne and commemorate their loved ones.

Cosmos Projection Rooms

Set in a private and comfortable setting, the cosmos projection room features a high-tech projection screen and opposing seats for family members to sit back, look into space with their loved one’s burial location projected, and reminiscence or commemorate them.

It also features an open hatch, where visitors are able to look up directly into the stars, thus creating an atmosphere of peace and surrealness. The projection room also allows for visitation of larger groups of friends and family.

User Interface

Users / visitors can navigate or access other profiles buried in space using the tablet provided in the projection rooms, via the same Cosmos interface and platform. This functions in the same vein as an individual using it independently on a personal device, thus making the platform streamlined on all fronts.
